Uganda’s opposition heavyweight Kizza Besigye has been arrested by police in the capital Kampala on Tuesday.
Dr Besigye was leading a demonstration by Ugandans angry over the rising cost of basic commodities when he was arrested on suspicion of inciting protesters to resort to violence.
The four-time presidential candidate was seen being whisked away by the police who tried to disperse the demonstration in central Kampala.
Besigye 66, was veteran president Yoweri Museveni’s personal physician before the two fell out, the former challenging in subsequent elections for the Ugandan presidency and lost.
