Ugandan President Museveni arrived in South Africa on Tuesday on a one-day state visit aimed at strengthening ties between Pretoria and Kampala.
The Ugandan leader held bilateral talks with South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa at Union Buildings in Pretoria during which they discussed political, economic, regional, continental and international issues.
Uganda is South Africa’s 15th largest trading partner on the continent and the second-largest in East Africa.
Official figures show that between 2017 and 2021, total trade between South Africa and Uganda peaked at US$167 million, “which the two countries agree is well below potential,” according to Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Vincent Magwenya
He revealed that South Africa’s exports to Uganda rose from US$121 million in 2017 to US$173 million in 2018, while its imports from Kampala increased from US$7 million in 2017 to $18.2 million in 2020.
Several cabinet ministers and a business delegation are accompanying Museveni who will participate in the South Africa-Uganda Business Forum during the state visit.
