The announcement of British troops’ withdrawal follows the definitive departure of the French army from Malian territory, according to the English daily The Times.
London is following Paris in its military disengagement from Mali. The 250 British soldiers so far engaged in the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) are ready to leave the Sahelian country.
The information was given by the English daily The Times, which also informs that the withdrawal of the United Kingdom comes after the announcement, Wednesday, November 9, 2022, by French President Emmanuel Macron of the official end of the military Operation Barkhane in the Sahel, which has since 2014 been fighting the jihadist presence in the region. The last French soldiers withdrew from Mali three months ago.
British forces, from the Light Dragoons and the Royal Anglians, were dispatched to the eastern town of Gao, as part of Operation Newcombe in 2020. They were part of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA), which involved 11,700 troops from 65 countries.
