These accusations, which were widely reported in international media, led to a diplomatic rift between Ukraine and the two West African nations.
In a statement issued in August 2024, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry refuted these claims as unfounded speculation. Despite the initial denial, Mali persisted in its accusations, ultimately resulting in the severing of diplomatic relations with both Mali and Niger.
Ukraine has also rejected allegations that weapons supplied by its allies to combat the Russian invasion have been diverted to conflict zones in Africa. The Ukrainian government has emphasized that it has implemented rigorous monitoring systems to ensure the proper use of military equipment, including parliamentary oversight.
The diplomatic tensions between Ukraine and several African countries coincide with increased Russian diplomatic activity in the region. Russia, which actively supports the Malian authorities, has been accused of fueling internal conflicts through its support for rebel groups.
Despite the diplomatic ruptures, Ukraine has reaffirmed its commitment to peaceful and mutually beneficial relations with all African states. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has emphasized its respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of African countries and has urged Mali and Niger to disregard what it considers to be Russian propaganda.
Ukraine has reserved the right to take appropriate measures to defend its interests in the face of these unfounded allegations.
