A total of 504 households have sought refuge in Ansongo, Mali, according to the UN.
Members of the Regional Office of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) have assessed the threats to the civilian population in Ansongo, a commune in the Gao region of northern Mali. On site, the UN mission was able to see the living conditions of internally displaced persons and discuss the security situation with local authorities.
The prefect of Ansongo, Mohamed Ag Aklini, gave the team an overview of the situation since the arrival of IDPs from the neighbouring town of Tin-Hamma, fleeing threats from armed groups.
“The administrative authority stressed the need to provide basic necessities to the host communities of Ansongo, whose resources are already meagre,” MINUSMA said Wednesday in a statement.
On 29 August 2022, alerted to threats in the Tin-Hamma area, MINUSMA conducted an operation of overflight of the area by helicopter gunships to deter any attack. A rapid reaction force was also deployed there by land.
MINUSMA’s commitment and efforts to protect civilians at risk are part of a broader protection solution. This includes combating insecurity to enable displaced people to return to their localities.
