This collaboration aims to amplify the impact of sustainable business practices across Africa. GABI aligns with the UNGC’s Africa Strategy, which seeks to cultivate a network of responsible and ambitious African businesses ready to capitalize on the continent’s vast potential.
The partnership was solidified through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Ambassador Albert Muchanga, the AUC’s Commissioner for Economic Development, and Sanda Ojiambo, the UNGC’s Executive Director. This signing took place during the African Union’s Sixth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting in Accra, Ghana.
Building upon the existing framework between the UN and the AU for implementing both Agenda 2063 (Africa’s development blueprint) and the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030), this new partnership will support the next phase of Agenda 2063’s second decade (2023-2032). The UNGC will, in turn, encourage African businesses to support the goals of the AUC.
Spearheaded by UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina J. Mohammed, GABI aspires to not only make Africa a more attractive destination for businesses and investments but also contribute to achieving both Agenda 2063 and the Sustainable Development Goals.
Ambassador Muchanga emphasized the significance of this partnership, highlighting it as a major step forward in realizing the objectives outlined in Agenda 2063. “This collaboration with the UNGC reaffirms our dedication to fostering sustainable business practices and economic growth throughout Africa. Together, we aim to create a vibrant business environment that promotes inclusive progress and empowers African nations to reach their full potential,” he said.
Sanda Ojiambo, the AUC Commissioner for Economic Development, echoed these sentiments, stressing the role of strong entrepreneurs in Africa’s economic development. “We share a transformative vision for the continent,” she stated, “where a robust and inclusive African private sector can help mitigate economic risks, attract investments, and create jobs, ultimately building more prosperous and sustainable communities.”
