Three died in the skirmishes as opposition stalwarts of the Parti de l’unité et du rassemblement (PUR) and supporters of the ruling coalition Benno Bokk Yakaar (BBY) clashed in Tamacounda.
In a statement seen by APA on Wednesday, Mr. Chambas called on presidential candidates and their supporters to reject violence and honour their commitments “to ensuring a participatory and peaceful election.”
He added: “One dead man is one too many. Every citizen must be concerned and responsible for the protection of peace and tolerance that is the wealth of the Senegalese people”.
He urged candidates and their supporters, civil society activists and authorities to call for calm and restraint, and to respect the values of peace and tolerance.
In a statement to APA, the Senegalese National Cell of the ECOWAS Women’s Peace and Security Network REPSFECO/SENEGAL condemned “with the utmost energy” the violence noted at this time of the election campaign on the national territory.
In addition, it urged Senegal to strengthen the security system to ensure the security of all segments of the population in the face of this “growing insecurity.”
It also urged the presidential candidates to call on their staff and supporters to be responsible, restrained and calm and not to be provocative, to avoid inflammatory speeches and remarks that can particularly stir up tension and create conflict situations and avoid any confrontation.
