Mauritania is an example to follow in terms of stability, in a region dealing with major security challenges, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for Africa and the Sahel region (UNOWAS), Mohamed Ibn Chambas said on Wednesday in Nouakchott.
Speaking to the press at th end of a meeting with Mauritanian leader,Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, he particularly congratulated the latter for its action in favor of stability.
He added that he was instructed by the United Nations to inquire about the conditions under which the 22 June, 2019 presidential election of will be held in Mauritania.
Ibn Chambas also praised “the major role” played by the Mauritanian head of state alongside his peers of the G5 Sahel (Mali, Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso), in facing the challenges of terrorism and violent extremism.
He also hailed President Ould Abdel Aziz’s commitment to preparing a presidential election to which he is not a candidate, “and this in a climate that will be transparent and credible.”
“This will also make Mauritania amodel of democracy in this sub-region,” said Mr. Chambas, who previously held a seriesof in the Mauritanian capital , with the six presidential candidates and officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI).
“The election supervising body (CENI) strives to ensure neutrality, professionalism and fairness to all candidates, in order to ensure an open and transparent process for peaceful and credible elections.” Ibn Chambas concluded.
