The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, on Thursday 21 March, held a meeting with Captain Ibrahim Traore, the presidential office said in a press release.
According to our source, Volker Türk expressed his solidarity with Burkina Faso in the context of the security situation.
The senior United Nations official acknowledged that the country’s development was affected by the insecurity and hoped that human rights issues would be addressed in a holistic and comprehensive manner, reported the Presidency of Faso.
“Human rights are also questions of socio-economic rights and development. And they are closely linked to security issues,” Mr. Türk said.
Arriving yesterday, Wednesday, the High Commissioner held talks with the ministers for human rights, defence and foreign affairs. He also met representatives of civil society, UN leaders and staff, and members of the diplomatic corps.
Mr. Türk’s visit comes at a time when Burkina Faso’s defence and security forces are regularly accused of abuses against civilians. It also takes place in a context marked by the enlistment of several citizens at the front to fight terrorism.
This is High Commissioner Türk’s first visit to Burkina Faso, while the High Commissioner he replaced visited the country in November 2021.
