According to a statement from the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) seen by APA on Wednesday, the United Nations needs CFA107 billion to provide vital humanitarian assistance to some of the displaced.
“Violent clashes in Cameroon between military and armed separatists in the past 13 months have compelled thousands of people to flee their homes, some of them crossing into Nigeria,” UNHCR spokesman Babar Baloch said.
According to UN statistics, 437,000 people were displaced in Cameroon as a result of the conflict in the two English-speaking regions of South-West and North-West, while more than 35,000 have fled to neighboring Nigeria.
UNHCR said “the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate”.
The organization said it fears that more people will be forced to flee in the next few months.
“As the fighting continues, we expect the number of displaced to increase”, it warned.
