The UN envoy for the Sahara, former German President Horst Kohler, 76, has resigned from office “for health reasons,” the UN said on Wednesday in a statement.
“The Secretary-General (Antonio Guterres) deeply regrets this resignation but says he perfectly understands it and conveys his best wishes to the Emissary,” the UN statement says
Reacting on the spot, Morocco took note, with regret, of the resignation of the Personal Envoy of the United Nations Secretary General for the Moroccan Sahara, a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation says.
“The Kingdom of Morocco pays tribute to Mr. Horst Kohler for his efforts since his appointment in August 2017. He commends the consistency, availability and professionalism with which Mr. Kohler has fulfilled his duties.” the statement reads.
Morocco reiterates its “support for the efforts of the Secretary General of the United Nations to settle the regional dispute over the Moroccan Sahara,” the source added, insisting that the Kingdom remains “committed to finding a realistic, pragmatic and sustainable political solution, based on the compromise, within the framework of the Autonomy Initiative.”
