The President of the General Assembly of the United Nations, Ms. Maria Fernanda Espinosa Graces, on Friday broke down after she was taken round the Cape Coast dungeon to acquaint herself with the remnants of the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade.
Speaking at a news conference in Cape Coast after touring the dungeon, Espinosa Graces said that it was heartbreaking to see how some human beings were cruelly treated by fellow human beings about 400 years ago.
According to her, the traces of the obnoxious trade should remind all races in the world not to repeat such inhuman act.
She added that the memory is a powerful tool that alert people not to repeat such inhuman act in the history of humankind.
The President of the United Nations General Assembly was in tears when she was addressing the news conference in Cape Coast, saying: “My heart break down when the tour guide was narrating the event one after the other to me. This is overwhelming and we must not repeat this again.
She said a new form of slavery is child labour, which she called for concerted efforts to eliminate,
Espinosa Graces is on a three-day visit to Ghana as part of the Year of Return of Diaspora programme and she chose Cape Coast dungeon as part her itinerary.
Some prominent personalities, who had visited Cape Coast Castle recently, included the US First Lady Melania Trump, in 2018 and former US President Barrack Obama in 2010.
