At the end of the year, the cold season in Africa’s westernmost country is gradually setting in.
As a result, the ANACIM has announced that “a barrage of cold air from the North Atlantic basin, near the Moroccan coast, will affect almost the entire Senegalese territory from 28 to 30 December 2022.”
The phenomenon, according to the special weather bulletin of the ANACIM published Tuesday, will lead to blows of coolness, as well as light to moderate rainfall throughout the national territory.
“The rains accompanied by thunderstorms in some areas will be particularly noted in the southern region of Casamance, over the Central and North-Eastern regions from the morning of Wednesday, December 28 until the late evening of Friday, December 30, 2022,” it added.
However, in the rest of the country, including Dakar (West), Saint-Louis (North), Louga (North-West) and Kedougou (South-East), the likelihood of rainfall will be very low.
“These weather conditions could present a risk of losses for livestock and crops exposed to the open air,” concluded the ANACIM note, which brings back bad memories of similar event 20 years ago.
On January 8, 9 and 10, 2002, unseasonal rains, combined with a significant drop in temperatures in the regions of Saint-Louis and Louga, caused the death of 500 to 600,000 head of cattle.
