The U.S. Embassy in Kigali announced Saturday the arrival of a donation of 418,860 doses of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines to the Government of Rwanda.
The vaccines which arrived at Kigali International Airport in Nairobi on Saturday represent a donation and brings the total number of United States donated Moderna and Pfizer vaccines to Rwanda to 1.6 million doses.
To complement the vaccine donation, the United States has invested $1,1 million to support the vaccine rollout in Rwanda through projects aimed at increasing demand for vaccines, health worker training, project monitoring, strengthening supply chain and cold storage capacity, and monitoring adverse effects.
The donation is part of the Biden administration’s support for COVAX, the global vaccine sharing program with the World Health Organization (WHO) to help distribute vaccines to poorer countries.
In June, Biden said the US would donate 500 million doses of Pfizer’s shot, made with partner BioNTech SE.
Rwanda aims to vaccinate 60% of its population by June 2022.
