The purpose of the visit was to gain a deeper understanding of MINURSO’s operations and to discuss the challenges faced in maintaining peace in the Western Sahara region.
During their visit, the US delegation met with Alexandre Ivanko, the head of MINURSO, and the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for the Sahara. Discussions focused on MINURSO’s role in monitoring the 1991 ceasefire and the difficulties encountered since the Polisario Front’s withdrawal from the agreement in November 2020.
The delegation expressed concerns regarding the Polisario Front’s attempts to hinder the movement of MINURSO units east of the defensive wall. These issues have been highlighted in recent UN Secretary-General reports on the Sahara conflict. This visit marks the second time a US Embassy delegation has visited MINURSO headquarters, demonstrating the United States’ continued interest in the region’s stability.
