The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Olayemi Cardoso, has reaffirmed the commitment of the CBN to gender inclusion in the financial sector.
Speaking at the grand finale of the International Women’s Day commemoration at the CBN headquarters in Abuja, Mr. Cardoso highlighted the increasing presence of female leaders in top positions across banks and regulatory bodies.
He emphasised the strides women have made in Nigeria’s banking industry, noting that the number of female managing directors in financial institutions is at an all-time high.
Recalling that the UN theme for the International Women’s Day 2025, is ‘For ALL Women and Girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment’, he called for action to unlock equal rights, power, and opportunities for all, with a focus on empowering the next generation.
“At the CBN, we are proud to be part of this global movement. Women now make up 35 per cent of recently appointed directors and three out of the seven non-executive board members, showing our firm commitment to fostering inclusive leadership in Nigeria’s financial sector,” Cardoso stated.
He described gender equality as both a moral and economic necessity, stressing that the financial sector thrives when diverse leadership perspectives are embraced.
“Diversity drives innovation, and we will continue to champion women’s growth in the workplace through leadership programmes, mentorship, and policies that support work-life balance,” he said.
In her remarks at the event, the Deputy Governor, Corporate Services of the CBN, Emem Usoro, urged women to take up leadership roles without fear, shattering stereotypes that often limit their advancement.
“Refuse to play into stereotypes! Desist from making excuses because you are a woman. Be bold, be strong, and always seek to make a meaningful impact,” she said.
The event, themed ‘Inspiring Change, Leading with Purpose, and Creating Impact’, served as a platform to recognise and honour outstanding women who have made significant contributions to the financial sector. Several female executives were presented with awards for their leadership and impact on the industry.
As the CBN continues to push for policies that encourage gender balance, the event underscored the bank’s broader vision of a future where women are not only participants, but also key decision-makers in Nigeria’s economic and financial landscape.
