APA-Rabat (Morocco) The Moroccan women’s national team have pulled off a historic and unprecedented feat at the World Cup, reaching the round of 16 for the first time in their history and in their debut at the global competition.
The Atlas Lionesses qualified for the Round of 16 on Thursday with a 1-0 win over Colombia in their third and final Group H match and a 1-1 draw with South Korea.
The only goal of the match was scored by Anissa Lahmari (45th+4). With this success, Morocco became the 4th nation to make it past the first round in their first appearance.
On Thursday, the Moroccan players achieved a great feat by beating Colombia (1-0) in the 3rd and last match of the group stage to advance to the last 16 of the World Cup.
Nobody was expecting such a feat, especially after the Atlas Lionesses had been thrashed 6-0 by Germany in their first match.
In the other group match, Germany could only a manage a 1-1 draw with South Korea to finish third, one point ahead of fourth-placed Asians.
The Atlas Lionesses face a formidable opponent in Hervé Renard’s France.
The match is scheduled for August 8 at Adelaide’s Hindmarsh Stadium.
France finished top of Group F after a 0-0 draw with Jamaica and two wins over Brazil (2-1) and Panama (6-3).
France, who are playing in their fifth World Cup finals, achieved their best ever result in 2011 when they finished fourth.
