Military personnel have been called in and are currently screening passengers and handling ground operations.
The workers are protesting against the planned merger between Kenya Airports Authority and Kenya Airways.
The strike has already disrupted flights at the country’s main airport.
The government is pushing for the merger that would see Kenya Airways take over all the staff and operations of the KAA in order to expand the range of its services to include ground handling, maintenance, catering, warehousing and cargo.
“Further to the strike by KAWU members, we expect disruptions on flights. Customers on flights after 11 A.M are advised not to come to the airport until further communication is shared,” Kenya Airways said in a statement issued in Nairobi.
“As a result of this strike, we anticipate situations of flight delays, cancellations and schedule changes. We regret this situation and we are making every effort to minimize the inconveniences this strike action may cause to our guests,” added the statement.
Speaking in Nairobi, Transport Cabinet Secretary, James Macharia termed the strike as illegal, saying the court had declared the strike unlawful and warned that action will be taken against union officials for disrupting security system at the airport.
Several striking workers were injured after the police violently dispersed them.
