The Copper Queens of Zambia on Friday defeated the Super Falcons of Nigeria 1-0 in the third place match of the Women African Cup of Nations tournament in Casablanca, Morocco.
The lone goal of the match played at the Stade Mohammed V, Casablanca, came in the 29th minute of the match against the run of play, when the Zambian player’s shot at goal from outside the 18-yard box hit the post and was deflected into the net by the Nigerian goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie for the own goal.
The Super Falcons, who dominated the game, missed several goal scoring chances created in the 20th and 24th minutes by Super Falcons players.
Another Nigerian player, Gift Monday threw away two scoring chances in the 46th and 57th minutes when her shots went outside the target.
The Copper Queens were able to ward off the attacks of the Super Falcons and maintained their lead until the end of the match to clinch the bronze medal of the tournament.
The finals of the tournament will be played on Saturday between the host, Morocco and South Africa. The two teams have never won the continental tournament.
However, the last four teams of the tournament, Morocco, Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia have booked their tickets for the Women’s World Cup next year.
