Zambia on Tuesday became the first African nation to host the Least Developed Countries (LDC) Future Forum, a high-profile international conference focused on enhancing the resilience of LDCs against economic, environmental and social shocks.
Held in Lusaka, the three-day forum from 1-3 April brings together delegates from over 50 countries, including policymakers, researchers, business leaders and development partners.
“This forum will provide a platform to craft solutions that empower our people, strengthen our economies and build resilience against future challenges,” Zambia’s Foreign Minister Mulambo Haimbe said on Tuesday.
Organised by the United Nations Office of the High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries, and Small Island Developing States (UN-OHRLLS) in collaboration with the government of Finland, the forum provides a platform to discuss innovative solutions for addressing systemic challenges faced by LDCs.
The event features four thematic sessions, which focus on climate-smart agricultural practices to improve food security, strategies for sustainable water and energy integration, approaches for economic diversification through circular economy principles, and the design of targeted social safety nets to strengthen community resilience.
A key focus throughout the forum is the incorporation of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in resilience-building strategies.
In addition, there will be high-level dialogues that will explore financing mechanisms and innovative partnerships aimed at promoting resilient economies.
A “fireside chat” with private sector representatives is also part of the programme, highlighting collaborative models for driving climate adaptation, economic diversification and sustainable development.
Zambia’s hosting of the forum marks a significant milestone in the LDC Future Forum series, which was previously held in Finland.
The conference seeks to foster structural transformation and sustainable development in LDCs by leveraging innovation, technology and international cooperation.
