Mulambo Haimbe, Zambia’s acting foreign minister, met with his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita. The discussions yielded a renewed commitment from Zambia regarding Morocco’s territorial integrity, including the disputed Western Sahara region.
The statement highlighted Zambia’s endorsement of Morocco’s proposed autonomy plan for the territory. Zambia views this plan as a “credible, serious and realistic” solution to the long-standing dispute.
Haimbe also expressed support for the ongoing UN efforts aimed at finding a lasting resolution to the Western Sahara issue.
The Moroccan minister welcomed Zambia’s stance, emphasizing the positive relationship between the two nations. Recent developments like the opening of a Zambian embassy in Rabat and a consulate in Laayoune (a key city in Western Sahara) in 2020 were noted as positive signs. Additionally, Zambia’s participation in a 2021 conference supporting Morocco’s autonomy plan was mentioned.
