The Zimbabwe National Editors’ Forum (ZINEF) has strongly condemned the arrest of investigative journalist Blessed Mhlanga, describing it as an attack on press freedom and a violation of constitutionally protected rights.
Mhlanga, a presenter for Alpha Media Holdings’ online platform Heart and Soul Television, was taken into police custody on Monday after authorities accused him of transmitting data messages likely to incite public violence.
His lawyer Chris Mhike said the charges stem from statements allegedly made by war veteran and ZANU PF central committee member Blessed Geza during interviews conducted by Mhlanga on January 27 and February 11.
Mhlanga was detained overnight and was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday.
ZINEF chairperson Dumisani Muleya denounced the arrest, stating that Mhlanga was simply carrying out his professional duties as a journalist.
“The interviews constituted legitimate journalism practice and media business,” Muleya said in a statement.
“Mhlanga’s arrest – which has a chilling effect on journalists’ professional work – is a clear attack on press freedom and constitutionally guaranteed rights, particularly freedom of expression.”
Geza had over the past two months issued statements and provided interviews through HSTV, anchored by Mhlanga, calling for President Emmerson Mnangagwa to resign from office immediately, adding that “failure to which the people of Zimbabwe will use the constitution to assist him to step down.”
ZINEF has called for Mhlanga’s immediate release and urged authorities to ensure his safety while in custody.
