Zimbabwe’s largest public hospital has banned visits to patients amid a surge in coronavirus cases, APA learnt here on Thursday.
The government-run Parirenyatwa Hospital said it was, until further notice, no longer allowing relatives to visit patients admitted at the hospital as part of measures “to protect in-patients, staff members and visitors.”
“Please be advised that we have suspended all the visiting times due to the surge in the number of COVID-19 local infections and increase in reported cases within our institution,” the hospital said in a statement.
Most Zimbabwean hospitals allow relatives to visit patients twice a day.
Zimbabwe has witnessed a surge in COVID-19 infections in the past few weeks, with the highest number of daily deaths of nine recorded on Tuesday.
The majority of the new infections are local transmissions, with health workers among those most affected.
The country has so far recorded 11,007 COVID-19 cases and 304 deaths since March.
