The Zimbabwe government has reintroduced passes to enable people from the border community of Binga to cross into Zambia following a decline in COVID-19 cases in both countries, state media reported on Thursday.
The Chronicle daily reported that villagers from Binga can now cross into Zambia on production of clearance letters from the police, with Zambians living the Zambezi River that separates the two countries allowed to do the same.
The system was discontinued in 2020 as part of measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
The resumption of the border passes comes in the wake of the relaxation of COVID-19 regulations by several southern African countries such as Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
The suspension of the system has over the past two years disrupted family unions and the carrying out of cultural rites by Tonga people who live on either side of the border.
