Global content platform and production company Netflix has appointed Zimbabwean telecommunications billionaire Strive Masiyiwa to its board of directors, the company said on Thursday.
Netflix co-founder and co-chief executive officer Reed Hastings said Masiyiwa’s entrepreneurship and “vision in building businesses across Africa and beyond will bring valuable insights and experience” to the board as the company works “to improve and serve more members all around the world.”
“We are delighted to welcome Strive to the Netflix board,” Hastings said in a statement.
Masiyiwa is the founder of Econet Group which has operations and investments in 29 countries in Africa and beyond.
These include Zimbabwe’s leading mobile operator Econet Wireless; pan-African broadband company Liquid Telecom, and Africa Data Centres.
Masiyiwa replaces former US ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice who stepped down last week to join President-elect Joe Biden’s incoming administration.
