APA-Pretoria (South Africa) South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC) has suspended former president Jacob Zuma following his recent remarks that he no longer supported the organisation.
Zuma told supporters last December that he would not campaign or vote for the ANC under the current leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa whom he accused of victimising him.
Instead, he announced that he would campaign for the newly formed uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) party which he is expected to lead in the forthcoming 2024 general elections.
In its announcement following a meeting of the ANC’s national executive committee on Monday, the party said it had decided to “summarily suspend Jacob Zuma as a member” after over 60 years in the ANC.
The ANC constitution bars members from supporting or campaigning for other organisations whose objectives are not similar to theirs.
The former president was given two days to respond to the suspension before it is taken to the disciplinary committee of the party for further action.
