APA-Pretoria (South Africa) Former South African president Jacob Zuma has been linked to a new political party believed to have been formed by disgruntled members of the ruling African National Congress (ANC)’s armed wing, uMkhonto we Sizwe.
According to a press release with no party name or logo that was issued on Thursday, Zuma is expected to make a “big announcement on his political future” in Johannesburg’s Soweto on Saturday.
“Come witness the beginning of a new chapter in politics as we craft the future of a new South Africa we all deserve; it is the beginning of a great future,” the statement said.
It added: “This is not the South Africa we fought and many died for.”
According to media reports monitored here on Friday, Zuma is expected to resign from the ANC and lead the uMkhonto we Sizwe-linked party.
It is understood the new party has already been registered with the Independent Electoral Commission.
The Jacob Zuma Foundation refused to comment on the speculation.
Zuma was removed from the presidency of the ANC in February 2018 following allegations of complicit in the capture of state institutions by private individuals, including the Indian-born Gupta brothers who are currently on the run.
