At least 26 Ethiopian nationals were rescued on Thursday evening when South African security agents dismantled a human trafficking ring in Johannesburg.
Philani Nkwalase, spokesperson of South African police’s specialised investigation unit known as the Hawks, said 15 of the undocumented Ethiopians were discovered at a house in Johannesburg’s Sandringham suburb following a tip-off.
The other 11 were rounded up in the area after they had escaped from the house before the police arrived. All 26 trafficking victims were naked.
It is not clear how many victims were at the house as some of them had escaped by the time the police arrived.
Nkwalase said three suspects were arrested and would face charges of involvement in the human trafficking operation.
