A magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit near Āwash area of central Ethiopia’s Āfar region on Sunday, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) reported.
According to the center, the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter early afternoon on Sunday, January 12th, 2025, at 2:55 pm local time.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake did not cause any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people living in Metehara and Debre Berhan towns about 40 and 57 kilometers away from the epicenter respectively.
Sunday’s quake comes a day after, a 5.5-magnitude earthquake hit the capital Addis Ababa where the damage was also limited, according to residents.
The depth of Saturday’s earthquake was 10 kilometers, according to the center.
The east African country had also witnessed two earthquakes in less than four minutes last Wednesday.
