At least 50 families in Musanze, a district in Northern Rwanda were left homeless after heavy rains destroyed housing structures and valuable property., a senior local administrative official confirmed Wednesday to APA in Kigali.
The Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs in Musanze district, Axelle Kamanzi told reporters that the heavy rains and flash floods affected a large number of villages and townships in the three in the area.
The natural disaster also destroyed hundreds of residential houses and affected thousands of acres of farmland in the area, according to the same source.
Humanitarian agencies in collaboration with local administrative officials are currently conducting needs assessment in order to deliver aid for thousands of affected residents.
Latest estimates by the Rwandan ministry in charge of Disaster Management and Refugees affairs indicate that landslides, floods and other natural disasters triggered by downpours have left 137 people dead in Rwanda since January this year.
Reports indicate that 2,913 residential houses were destroyed while 1,540 hectares of crops were submerged or damaged by the floods.
Earlier last month, Rwanda Meteorology Agency forecasted heavy rains in different parts of Rwanda over the next three months until December 2022.
