The exposure of 81,885 ghost workers in Ghana followed a census of active personnel carried out at the request of the Finance Minister to facilitate the payment of salary arrears dating back to August 2024.
President John Dramani Mahama had ordered an immediate investigation by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) into the management of the National Service under the previous government, after uncovering
81,885 “ghost employees” on the institution’s payroll, the presidential spokesperson said in a statement made available to APA.
The Ministry of Finance had confirmed the release of 226,019,224 Ghanaian cedis (about 14.6 million US dollars) to cover arrears for 98,145 employees, who are actually on duty, a figure significantly lower than the initial 180,030 names presented by the former management.
The President had also instructed the new leadership of the National Service Authority to implement urgent reforms, establishing proper controls to prevent such occurrences in the future.
This development comes amid Ghana’s intensified fight against corruption, as the country faces significant economic challenges.
