Ivorian President Alassane Ouattara received the African Prize for the Promotion of Peace on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, during the opening of the 5th edition of the African Peace Conference in Nouakchott.
The distinction was presented to his representative, Ahoussou Jeannot, Minister of State and Special Advisor.
This award, established in 2022, honors President Ouattara’s leadership in strengthening regional stability, particularly within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Sheikh Al Mahfoudh Bin Bayyah, the Conference Coordinator, praised “his commitment to shared humanist values and his unwavering support for peaceful solutions” that have contributed to the consolidation of peace in West Africa.
The ceremony took place under the high patronage of Mauritanian President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, as part of a joint initiative between the Mauritanian government and the Abu Dhabi Peace
Forum.
This distinction was previously awarded to Adama Barrow (2024), Muhammadu Buhari (2023) and Mohamed Bazoum (2022).
The conference, which is being held from 21 to 23 January under the theme “The African continent: the duty of dialogue and the relevance of reconciliation”, brings together political actors and experts to
discuss peace issues on the continent.
In his opening speech, the President of the Abu Dhabi Peace Forum stressed the importance of dialogue as a tool for preventing and resolving conflicts, citing in particular the situations in Sudan, Mali, Libya and Mozambique.
