An eight-member delegation of Botswana lawmakers led by Speaker of the National Assembly Dithapelo Keorapetse left on Tuesday for the 150th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly set for 5-9 April in Uzbekistan.
Other members of the delegation include Assistant Minister for State President Maipelo Mophuting, leader of the opposition in parliament Dumelang Saleshando, Victor Phologolo, Paleo Motaosane, Phenyo Segokgo, Kenny Kapinga and Reason Lekutlane.
Clerk of the National Assembly Gabriel Malebang will also participate in the Assembly’s meetings for parliamentary clerks.
The delegation will engage in various discussions centred on this year’s theme, “Parliamentary Action for Social Development and Justice.”
Key agenda items include deliberations on the role of parliaments in advancing a two-state solution in Palestine, and strategies for mitigating the long-term impacts of conflicts on sustainable development.
The Assembly will conclude with the adoption of an outcome document on its overarching theme.
The event will also feature thematic sessions such as those held by the Governing Council and committees on peace, international security, sustainable development, and human rights.
The Assembly serves as a platform for delegates to exchange views, shape policy recommendations and address pressing global issues.
The Botswana delegation is expected to return on 12 April.
