The bodies of five men were discovered in a shack in the Chris Hani informal settlement in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province, following a reported shooting on Tuesday night.
Police spokesperson Majola Nkohli confirmed that authorities were alerted to the incident around 9:30pm (1930 GMT).
Upon arrival at the scene in New Brighton, Gqeberha, officers found the victims with multiple gunshot wounds.
“The circumstances surrounding the incident are part of the investigation,” Nkohli told reporters.
The identities of the deceased have not been released, pending formal identification procedures.
This is the latest in a series of fatal shooting incidents that have occurred in South Africa during the past two years.
Most of the incidents have involved assailants entering homesteads or taverns and indiscriminately shooting the people inside.
The majority of the cases are yet to be resolved.
