He praised the country’s progress despite facing global challenges and highlighted the persistent issue of jihadist attacks that pose significant risks to national security.
During his annual State of the Nation address to the National Assembly, President Talon discussed various topics, underscoring the achievements of Benin even as the world grapples with uncertainty and instability. “While the world faces increasing tension and turmoil, destabilizing the global economy, and compromising democracy, international cooperation, and climate efforts, Benin continues to advance steadily on its path to development and the consolidation of its unity,” the President stated.
He acknowledged the nation’s successes across multiple sectors, noting, “Our achievements are undeniable in all areas, even if their effects are not always immediately visible.”
However, President Talon recognized that “the only area where we are still encountering difficulties is in the fight against terrorism along our northern border.” He stated, “Despite our efforts to manage and contain the threat, our defense and security forces stationed along the northern border continue to face challenges from terrorists operating freely in neighboring countries.”
Despite these challenges, he expressed optimism about the future, assuring that ongoing investments in equipment, infrastructure, and human resources would enhance national security. “I assure you that the investments currently underway will soon enable us to keep terrorists away from our territory,” President Talon affirmed.
In recent years, the northern region of Benin has faced jihadist attacks attributed to the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM), which is affiliated with Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM).
