In a statement Masisi said “On behalf of the people of Botswana, I wish to send my deepest condolences to our fellow African brothers and sisters who lost their loved ones over the past few days due to the devastating Cyclone Idai.”
He said Cyclone Idai has proven to be one of the worst disasters to hit the Southern African Development Community (SADC), with Mozambique being the hardest hit.
Hundreds of lives have been lost and thousands of people have been left homeless and displaced.
“I am deeply saddened by the devastating effects it has caused. As is our African tradition to step up and help when a neighbour is in need, and my government is providing emergency humanitarian relief and assistance in the form of water purifying solutions, non-perishable food-stuffs and blankets,” said Masisi.
He added that “I also appeal to you, fellow Batswana to offer your support by donating some of these items. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation will coordinate this exercise.”
