Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni is in the South Sudan capital Juba for talks with counterpart
Salva Kiir Mayardit over the political situation in the world’s newest country.
Museveni was received on Thursday afternoon by Kiir for a state visit to South Sudan amid growing uncertainty over the continuing detention of first vice-president Riek Machar, his wife and two bodyguards.
Machar and his allies are accused of orchestrating last month’s attack on a garrison in Upper Nile State.
Weeks of attacks by the Machar-backed White Army prompted Kiir’s distress call for help from Uganda which deployed troops to Juba to protect the government.
Museveni is one of Salva Kiir’s staunchest allies in the region.
According to information from the South Sudanese presidency, the two leaders are expected to discuss bilateral relations between Juba and Kampala, and the way forward from the current political crisis in South Sudan.
