Botswana’s President Mokgweetsi Masisi has gone into mandatory self-isolation after testing positive for COVID-19, his office said on Monday.
Acting permanent secretary for government communications John-Thomas Dipowe said Masisi is isolating at his official residence in the capital Gaborone.
“This is necessitated by having tested positive for COVID-19 following routine testing for the virus,” Dipowe said.
He assured Batswana that Masisi “does not have any symptoms and will continue to receive close medical monitoring by his medical doctors.”
“The self-isolation is a precautionary measure in accordance with Botswana’s COVID-19 health protocols.”
Vice President Slumber Tsogwane will act as President of the Republic of Botswana until further notice, the official said.
