Minister of Justice, Defence and Security, Shaw Kgathi told parliament that Botswana is concerned about the fact that the Namibian community at the refugee camp continues to make political statements.
According to the Minister, the “public statements, which are of political nature, are inclined towards secession of one part of Namibia from the rest of that country, which is not in line with the Convention on the Status of Refugees.”
On a related matter, Kgathi said his ministry was awaiting the hearing of a matter in which the Botswana Court of Appeal is expected to rule on the fate of the Namibian refugees who are contesting their repatriation back to Namibia.
“In accordance with its obligation under the 1951 United Nations Convention and Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees, Botswana has been facilitating the repatriation and resettlement of refugees to countries that are willing to receive them,” said Kgathi.
