Permanent secretary to the President Carter Morupisi said Gaborone is in talks with Beijing to ensure that Khama’s decision to meet the Dalai Lama does not harm relations between the two countries.
He said Khama’s trip to India last week came at a time when Botswana was trying to mend relations with China.
In 2017, Khama’s administration angered China by inviting the Dalai Lama to visit Botswana. The visit never took place because Tibetan spiritual leader fell ill.
Morupisi said even when he was the President, Khama was advised not to allow the Dalai Lama to visit but he would not budge.
He said currently there is no action that the government can take against Khama apart from having written a letter advising him not to travel to India.
Khama chartered a private plane to India and the government withdrew his security detail and support staff.
Government had opposed the trip and refused to provide financial and logistical support.
Botswana diplomats in areas he passed through were instructed not to extend necessary support to the former president.
Khama has since revealed that he will soon be taking the government to court because he is entitled to four trips in a year as provides for in the Constitution.
