A former Speaker and five others are being prosecuted in Burkina Faso over the embezzlement of public funds, granting unjustified advantages, and money laundering, prosecutor Blaise Bazie confirmed on Friday.
“They are essentially accused of having, through maneuvers, concluded public contracts by direct agreement, without respecting the price list, for the disguised purposes of embezzlement of public funds and illicit enrichment,” the public prosecutor explained.
He added that the former President of the National Assembly is also accused of unjustified distribution of money to third parties from funds allocated to the Institution.
Absent from the country for “alleged reasons of medical care,” arrangements will be made for him to be presented to the judge for the continuation of the investigation.
His assets in several cities in Burkina Faso have been impounded by the state.
Alassane Bala Sakande was President of the National Assembly from September 2017 to January 2022.
