The “National Conference on Transition” begins this Monday, February 28, 2022 in Burkina Faso.
At the end of these popular consultations, which are expected to last two weeks, the 350 personalities from the different strata of Burkinabe society are expected to consider the work of the technical commission.
In its report to Burkina Faso’s Head of State Paul Henri Damiba on Wednesday, the technical commission created by the junta after it took power proposed a 30-month transition period and the establishment of a small government and legislature.
The conclusions of the national conference are expected to lead to a new roadmap that will set out the functioning and duration of the transition based on the commission’s proposals. The junta, which has been in power since the January 24 coup against President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, says it cannot give a precise duration to the transition for the moment.
The Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration (MPSR), through the voice of lieutenant-colonel Naon Daba, responded that the country must reach a “certain level of strength” before giving a specific date on the duration of the transition, putting forward the fight against terrorism.
After Mali and Guinea, Burkina Faso is in the hands of a military junta. It has witnessed the eighth coup in the history of this poor, landlocked West African country that has been plagued by jihadism since 2013.
