APA-Johannesburg (South Africa) South Africa’s Student Representative Councils (SRCs) from 26 universities have received a US$1.6 million donation to pay for student registration fees and historical debt, press reports have said.
According to the reports, the donation was announced by Patrice Motsepe Foundation chief executive Precious Moloi-Motsepe during a meeting with student leaders in Johannesburg on Sunday.
Moloi-Motsepe is wife to mining tycoon and Confederation of African Football president Patrice Motsepe.
During the dialogue meeting, the student leaders shared their concerns and solutions to youth unemployment and the uncertain future.
The talks revealed the vital role collaboration between the private sector and academic institutions to drive meaningful research endeavours to address the skills and information mismatch that existed in the labour market, the reports added.
“We must not merely reflect on these insights but pledge ourselves to actions that will dismantle barriers, inspire hope, and pave pathways of opportunity,” Moloi-Motsepe said.
With the donation, the foundation hoped to encourage support from other private sector and non-profit stakeholders who stood to benefit from an educated and skilled youth population, she said.
