Halimatou Sadia, a refugee who spent over a decade in Cameroon, is among those who have chosen to return to her homeland. She and her family, along with hundreds of others, embarked on a journey back to the Central African Republic, eager to rebuild their lives.
The UN Refugee Agency has been instrumental in facilitating the voluntary repatriation process, working closely with the Central African government and neighboring countries. Since 2017, over 49,000 refugees have returned home, with 12,000 returning this year alone.
Despite the challenges and uncertainties, many returnees are hopeful about the future. Haouaou Halidou, another returnee, has successfully reintegrated into her community and started a tailoring business. Her story serves as an inspiration to others who are considering returning home.
UNHCR continues to provide support to returning refugees, offering cash assistance, livelihood training, and other essential services. The agency is also working to promote social cohesion between returnees and host communities.
As the security situation in the Central African Republic continues to improve, it is hoped that more refugees will be able to return home and rebuild their lives.
