APA – N’Djamena (Chad) – The colonel in question is accused of summarily executing a suspected murderer.
A Chadian army colonel has been stripped of his rank after being filmed summarily executing a suspected murderer.
The incident took place in Tissi, in the eastern province of Ouaddai. The video shows the colonel shooting a chained man at close range.
Speaking in Gorane and Zaghawa, the colonel described the executed man as his uncle’s alleged killer: “I have been looking for him for three months. Today I caught him. If I have to go to hell to avenge my uncle, I don’t care,” he exclaimed, before instructing those around him to “film the scene well.”
The footage, which appeared on the internet, provoked strong reactions from users, who called on the authorities to take appropriate action. In a radio message on 21 May, the commander of the Chad-Sudan joint force ordered the Tissi Special Forces commander to “immediately arrest the accused, interrogate him and bring him to his post to answer for his atrocity in court.”
Following the order, the accused was arrested and transferred to N’Djamena. On the same day, a decree was issued dismissing him from the ranks of the Chadian national army.
The case has been referred to the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the N’Djamena High Court.
