APA-Ndjamena (Chad) Several Chadian cities are being severely affected by a fuel shortage.
N’Djamena, the Chadian capital, woke up to an acute fuel shortage on Monday with several gas stations closed due to lack of supplies.
Long queues have been forming in front of the few petrol stations in operation.
The Minister of Hydrocarbons and Energy, Djerassem Le Bemadjiel has issued a statement on national radio reassuring consumers that the shortage will be addressed by Monday evening.
He said the shortage was caused by the non-delivery of petroleum products by the refinery on Sunday.
As a consequence of the shortage, the price of fuel has gone up.
The price of fuel at the pump remained the same at 580 CFA francs but in the streets, a litre sells for between 2000 and 3000 CFA francs, severely affecting the purchasing power of the average consumer.
In the provinces, consumers have been living this ordeal for at least two months.
Since January 2023, premium gas has become a rare and expensive commodity in Chad’s remote towns.
It was planned to overhaul the facilities of the Djermaya mini refinery, which supplies the country, this March.
This has not yet happened, according to company officials.
A source however claimed that the refinery continues to produce and deliver the same number of tanks for daily consumption.
