APA-Ndjamena (Chad) The Chadian Teachers’ Union (SET) which is leading a nationwide strike over unpaid wages is demanding that the government honour its obligations to science teachers and others.
Public secondary schools throughout the country have closed on April 17, being the result of a strike action called by the Chadian Teachers’ Union (SET).
The strike will last from April 17 to 19.
By Monday morning all public secondary schools in the capital, N’Djamena remain shut.
On the other hand, learning in private schools will not be interrupted.
According to the SET, the strike was called because the government had failed to meet three of their demands.
These demands are the issue of the salaries of teachers who will be integrated in August 2022, which has not been resolved, the unsettled salary arrears of science teachers which are still blocked in the public treasury, and the non-payment of transport costs for teachers posted to the province of Logone Oriental, in the extreme south of the country.
In the same vein, the SET provincial section in Mayo-Kebbi West, in the south-west, is also going on a three-day ‘dry strike’, starting on Thursday April 20.
Teachers in the province plan to use the demonstration to demand the release of a dozen people abducted by kidnappers, including one student.
On Tuesday April 18, the provincial section intends to organise a peaceful march in connection with this demand.
