APA-Ndjamena (Chad) The handover of responsibilities in various ministries is scheduled for December 3, 2024. The head of government took office on Tuesday.
24 hours after his appointment, the new transitional Prime Minister Succes Masra unveiled the list of his government team. On his proposal, Head of State Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno appointed a government of 30 ministers and 11 secretaries of state.
Overall, there were no major changes. Of the 30 ministers, ten are newcomers. Key departments such as Diplomacy, Finance, Public Security, Defense and Territorial Administration have seen their heads reappointed.
The new government must tackle a number of crises facing the population and civil servants. But it must also create the conditions for the organization of elections to mark the end of the transition that began in April 2021, following the assassination of President Idriss Deby Itno during an army counter-offensive against a rebel group in the north.
In outlining his government’s actions, Dr Succes Masra indicated that the priority would be to convince teachers to resume classes. Since November 2023, public schools have been closed due to a strike by teachers demanding payment of some of their entitlements.
A fierce opponent of the transitional authorities, whom he described as illegitimate, Dr. Succès Masra is now playing the appeasement card following the signing of the Kinshasa Agreement in November 2023. Under this agreement, he was made Prime Minister of the very first government of the 5th Republic. His appointment, although seen as a disappointment by some political leaders, is a sign of the inclusion so longed for by Chad’s partners.
