Chinese steel giant, Jingye Group, is expected to engage in the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, according to media reports.
Estimated at $26 billion, this infrastructure aims to connect West Africa, Morocco and Europe, with the aim of transforming the region’s energy and economic dynamics.
Jingye Group will support the project by supplying high-quality steel products.
According to Zhang Yuanyuan, vice-director of Jingye’s international marketing department, the group plans to deliver high-quality steel products for this major company.
This commitment is based on the group’s industrial expertise as well as the capabilities of its British subsidiary, Jingye British Steel, acquired in 2020.
Jingye British Steel has already participated in prestigious international projects, such as Beijing Daxing Airport and the Crossrail project in the United Kingdom. Its experience will now be used to provide solutions tailored to the technical challenges of the pipeline.
The project is supported by financial institutions such as the Islamic Development Bank and the OPEC Fund. It is expected to improve access to natural gas for countries on Africa’s Atlantic coast and strengthen energy connections with Europe.
Tenders for the Moroccan sections of the pipeline are scheduled for 2025. The first phase of the project, which will cover Morocco, Mauritania and Senegal, promises to boost regional economic growth, attract investment and support sustainable infrastructure in the countries concerned.
A Chinese steel group already active in 80 countries
The Jingye Group, based in China’s Hebei province, produces 15 million tonnes of steel per year and exports to more than 80 countries. Its projects include the transoceanic bridge in Brunei and the Shijiazhuang metro. Since acquiring British Steel, the group has invested significantly to modernise its infrastructure and strengthen its international presence.
With a total turnover of 13 billion dollars and more than 23,500 employees, Jingye is positioned as a key player in a steel industry in search of greener solutions. The company relies on environmentally friendly technological innovations to make a name for itself as a global leader in the sustainable steel industry.
Through its involvement in the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, Jingye Group not only underlines its international ambitions, but also contributes to a strategic project for energy and economic development in Africa and beyond.
