APA – N’Djamena (Chad) – The results confirm victory of the “YES” vote for the adoption of Chad’s draft constitution.
Three days after CONOREC announced the provisional results of the constitutional referendum, the Supreme Court delivered its verdict on 28 December.
The deliberations, read out by the President of the Supreme Court, Samir Adam Annour, confirmed the victory of the “YES” camp on the draft of the new constitution. Petitions by the Federal Bloc, the NO Front and the RNDT-Le Réveil party to overturn the vote were all rejected by the High Court.
According to the President of the High Court, the irregularities noted by the complainants “in no way affect the regularity of the ballot”.
However, of the 22,296 reports sent to the Supreme Court, it annulled 936 because of some irregularities.
These included the exorbitant number of voters, excessive voting by nomads, lack of signatures by members of polling stations and failure to respect the opening and closing times for polling.
As a result, the final results confirm the victory of the “YES” side with 85.90% of the votes cast, compared to the 86% announced by CONOREC.
The “NO” camp won 14.10% to 14%. The turnout was revised from 63.75% to 62.86%.
With these final results, the head of state has fifteen days to promulgate the new constitution, which enshrines the decentralised unitary nature of the state.
The new constitution will establish the Fifth Republic and pave the way for a return to constitutional order with presidential, legislative, senatorial and municipal elections.
